A fleece vest for the layer where you want core warmth but full sleeves would be too much. The stand-up collar covers the neck when the wind picks up, and at 340 g it stuffs into a pack corner without taking a jacket's worth of space.
Best for
Layering over a base layer on cool mornings, and under a shell when the temperature drops at camp.
Not ideal for
Wind and rain on its own. Fleece breathes rather than blocks, so it works best with a shell over it, and the open arms leave you needing sleeves in real cold.
